Subject Tutoring, Study Skills, Coaching and Educational Therapy Are 4 Different Purchases
Most Beverly Hills parents searching this phrase need 1 of 4 things. They're qualified differently, and in California none of the 4 titles comes with a state license.
Subject tutoring reteaches the material. Buy it when your student doesn't know the algebra.
Study skills work builds the system around the material: note-taking frameworks, recall techniques, exam preparation and workspace management. Buy it when your student understands the content and still tests badly.
Executive function coaching works on organization, time management, task initiation, working memory, emotional regulation and cognitive flexibility. Buy it when the homework gets done and never gets turned in.
Educational therapy is built for learning differences. UC Santa Cruz Silicon Valley Extension, which runs a certificate approved by the Association of Educational Therapists (AET), says "there is currently no state licensure for educational therapy" and that AET certification "is optional for practice in the field." AET's fact sheet says educational therapists don't diagnose, don't give cognitive, intelligence or psychological tests unless separately qualified, and don't practice psychotherapy.
The Ladder Method's programs cover the first 3. Traditional tutoring focuses on subject matter; we teach students how to learn, plan and organize. Therapy focuses on emotional processing; we focus on practical skill-building, time management and goal execution. We'll tell you on the consultation call if you're asking us for the wrong one.
Here's how that sorting went last school year. Of the 58 Beverly Hills families who booked a consultation with us in 2025-26, 21 asked for study skills. We placed 12 in study skills, 5 in subject tutoring, 3 in executive function coaching, and pointed 1 to an evaluation first. So 9 of 21 left the call with a different service than the one they asked for.
Use the Free Hours First
A Beverly Hills Unified student may already have free tutoring on the calendar. Check these 5 before you pay anyone, including us.
High-impact tutoring. The district's 16 August 2026 update says "Students returned to High-Impact Tutoring" as the 2026-27 year opened. At the 9 September 2025 board meeting, staff described free 1-hour sessions, Tuesday through Thursday, grouped by the skill a student is missing‡. The district credits the program, built with Stanford University on a grant, with moving Horace Mann and El Rodeo students out of below-grade-level status. Ask the school whether your child qualifies.
Home-language tutoring for English learners. The district's 2025-26 and 2026-27 plans fund "Tutoring services in students identified home language at enrollment." Ask the school how students are placed.
Independent study mentoring, grades 6 to 12. Independent study students get "a mandatory 1 hour, in-person, weekly individual meeting" with a teacher "to go over coursework, mentor, tutor and keep organized."
Library tutoring. Beverly Hills Public Library offers free 1-on-1 online tutoring 7 days a week, 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. Statewide, HomeworkCA gives K-12 students live tutoring 24/7, 361 days a year, provided through the California State Library until 31 July 2027.
Your IEP or 504. If your student has one, organizational or study-skills support may already be written into it. Read it before you pay for a second version of the same support.
Beverly Vista families have 1 more question to ask. The district says it has "already piloted AI-supported math tutoring at Beverly Vista Middle School." Find out what the pilot covers before you pay anyone to reteach the same math.
The order we'd use: the school's tutoring, the IEP or 504, 2 weeks of library hours, then private. We'd rather you call us in week 3 with that done than pay us for an hour the district already runs.

Beverly Hills Unified's Own Numbers
Most Beverly Hills students meet the state standard, and a real minority don't. In 2024-25, 71% of BHUSD students tested met or exceeded the English language arts standard and 62% met math, against California averages of 48.8% and 37.3%. That leaves 29% short in ELA and 38% short in math.
The district reports more movement since. Its 24 June 2026 report says scores rose 4 points in ELA, 5 in math and 9 in science, and that BHUSD "no longer has metrics rated below 'Meets Standard' on the California Dashboard," a first since the Dashboard began in 2017. AP scores of 3 or higher went from 84% to 88%.
The district hasn't published an effect size for its tutoring, and we won't invent one for ours. The state releases 2025-26 results on 15 October 2026.
Beverly Hills Unified is a 2,984-student district with a short path: Horace Mann or El Rodeo through 5th grade, Beverly Vista for 6th to 8th, then Beverly Hills High. In our intake, the load jumps at the move to Beverly Vista: 9 of the 21 study-skills requests we took from Beverly Hills families last year came from 6th and 7th graders.
How to Compare Tutoring Offers Near Beverly Hills
Compare offers by the month, at the same number of hours, and by what the tutor is qualified to do. By the hour they don't line up, because the 3 markets near Beverly Hills aren't selling the same thing.
Marketplace listings. Individual tutor profiles, booked by the hour. Ask each tutor for credentials directly.
Westside private tutors. At Harvard-Westlake, private tutoring is the majority experience: in a Chronicle poll, 55.8% of students had received it and 63% used tutors or test prep for the SAT or ACT. The school sits outside Beverly Hills, in Los Angeles.
Educational therapy. A service for learning differences, with no California license and an optional AET certification. The Wall Street Journal reported that health insurance doesn't cover it.
The Ladder Method. Study skills and executive function coaching on a published cadence. Targeted Learning is 2 sixty-minute sessions a week per subject, which comes to about 8 hours a month for 1 subject.
Whatever you're quoted, convert it to a month at your cadence. 2 sessions a week is about 8 hours a month, and a per-subject plan in 2 subjects doubles it. If you plan to pay from a 529, check the tutor against the federal tests further down.
"When it's your child and your child is struggling, you are in a vulnerable position," UCLA professor Connie Kasari told the Wall Street Journal. "The issue for parents is trying to figure out who is qualified." Ask every provider what the tutor is qualified to do. Ask us too.

For: a student who does well in most classes and struggles in 1 subject
Builds: subject-specific study technique, problem-solving and light executive functioning, for comprehension, retention and confidence

Academic Accelerator
For: a student who needs study skills plus time management or planning across more than 1 subject
Builds: note-taking, exam preparation, time management and organization
Typical cadence: a 60 to 90-minute weekend session and a 60 to 90-minute midweek session
Duration: depends on the number of subjects and the starting and target grades

What You Should See by Week 8
By week 8 you should see change without reading a testimonial. At the week-8 check-in we report 3 numbers:
Missing assignments, counted from the school portal, against the count at intake
Planner use: school days a week the student used it without a prompt
1 named assessment: the test or grade you picked at intake
Across 34 Beverly Hills and Westside students who started with us between September 2025 and February 2026, median missing assignments fell from 7 to 2 by week 8. 24 of the 34 used the planner at least 4 school days a week. 21 had raised the grade they named at intake. 6 moved on none of the 3, and we said so at the check-in; 3 of those moved to a different service.
Most clients begin noticing improvement within 4 to 8 weeks.
Then ask what happens after the contract ends. A 2026 WestEd follow-up of 1 online tutoring program, in a Colorado district and a Texas district, found "no statistically significant long-term impacts on math achievement across either district or dosage level." The authors read that as the earlier short-term gains not persisting. That isn't a Beverly Hills result. It's the question to put to any provider, including us.
529 Plans: The Federal Change and the California Catch
Federal law now lets a 529 pay for some K-12 tutoring. California doesn't follow, so a California family can owe state income tax plus a 2.5% additional tax on the earnings.
Federal. For distributions after 4 July 2025, K-12 expenses include "tuition for tutoring or educational classes outside of the home," if the tutor isn't related to the student and is licensed as a teacher in any state, has taught at an eligible educational institution, or is a subject matter expert in the subject. The same law added educational therapies for students with disabilities from "a licensed or accredited practitioner or provider," plus curriculum, books, online materials, test fees and dual enrollment. The annual K-12 limit went from $10,000 to $20,000 starting in 2026. Note the words "outside of the home": in-home tutoring doesn't fit them.
California. The Franchise Tax Board's 2025 Schedule CA instructions say "California law does not conform." Its Form 3805P instructions add that the earnings portion of a non-qualified 529 distribution "is includable in California taxable income and subject to an additional tax of 2½%." We found no signed bill changing that as of 29 September 2026.
There's 1 more catch for families weighing educational therapy. The federal list requires a licensed or accredited provider, and educational therapy has no California license. Ask a CPA whether a voluntary certification counts before you withdraw anything.

Coaches at The Ladder Method come from education, psychology and learning science, and many hold master's degrees or teaching credentials. Each one trains in The Ladder Method framework, which combines executive functioning, evidence-based learning techniques and emotional awareness. Founder Candice Lapin wrote it.

When We'll Point You Somewhere Else
When the free hour hasn't been tried. Start with the district and library options above.
When the problem is emotional. Therapy focuses on emotional processing. Anxiety, depression or trauma belong with a licensed clinician.
When nobody knows why the reading or math is hard. That calls for an evaluation first, from a qualified psychologist or the school's assessment team. Educational therapists don't diagnose, by AET's own description.
When the need is executive function coaching rather than study skills. It's a different engagement with a different cadence. If the consultation points there, we'll say so and send you to executive function coaching in Beverly Hills.
