What We Tutor in History
We tutor US History, World History, European History, Government, Economics and Art History at regular, honors and AP levels, plus Philosophy. Civics is on our coaching list.
Each subject gets 1 or 2 sessions a week, 60 minutes each, with a 1-hour weekly minimum. The number of weeks depends on how many subjects your student brings and how far the current grade sits from the target. That's how all our one-to-one tutoring runs, and history uses the same structure.
It starts with a consultation about the course and the goal. We match your student with the tutor who fits their personality and the class, meet weekly or every other week, and send parents a progress note every 4 weeks (M2). It ends when your student can do the work without us. There's no renewal date.
What Beverly Hills High Requires, by Graduating Class
Beverly Hills High students in the classes of 2026 through 2028 need 3 years of history and social science. The class of 2029 needs 3.5 years, because ethnic studies joins the list.

The district's January 2025 planning sheets list AP US History, AP European History, AP Human Geography and AP US Government, and let students take ethnic studies in any year from 9th through 12th. Check the 2026-27 course catalog before you build a plan around any of them. If your student is in the class of 2030, ask the counseling office which sheet applies. The published sheet stops at 2029.
For tutoring, the extra semester is a scheduling question. If a class-of-2029 student takes ethnic studies in the same year as APUSH, that year carries 2 history courses at once. Plan tutoring hours for that year first.
Ethnic studies is a Beverly Hills High graduation requirement starting with the class of 2029. It isn't a statewide requirement, because California hasn't funded it. A district can require a course the state hasn't paid for, and BHUSD does.
Assembly Bill 101 became law in October 2021. It required high schools to offer a semester of ethnic studies from 2025-26 and made the course a graduation requirement from the class of 2030. Both parts depended on a Budget Act appropriation. In May 2026 the state Department of Finance said no law had provided the money, and we found no funding for it in the 2026-27 budget.
For a BHHS family, the answer is local. The course counts toward the 240-credit diploma whatever Sacramento does next.

Ethnic Studies, the District Rule and the State Law
The May 2027 AP US History, AP World History: Modern and AP European History exams change their free-response questions. Course content, multiple choice and the scoring rubrics stay the same, according to College Board's exam update.
What changes:
All 3 short-answer questions are required, and each includes a source: secondary text for the first, a primary text for the second, and a non-text source such as a map, chart or cartoon for the third. Each comes from a different period.
The long essay is 1 required prompt with a short orienting statement. Students no longer choose their prompt.
The DBQ covers a wider span of years, so evidence can come from across the course.
Through May 2026, students chose their long-essay prompt, and some short-answer questions had no source at all. A practice set written before 2027 trains that older section. A student who drilled essay choice now has none to make.
Ask any tutor which version their practice exams follow. We rebuilt ours to the May 2027 format in August 2026 (M6).

2 exams on the same day aren't a conflict. A BHHS student in AP US Government and AP European History sits both on May 4, starting 4 hours apart, and needs both ready before that morning. A true conflict is 2 exams in the same slot, like AP European History and AP Microeconomics at noon on May 4. That student takes 1 of them in the late-testing window, which the school's AP coordinator arranges.

The May 2027 AP History Exams Have a New Free-Response Section
Every AP history free-response question is scored on a fixed College Board rubric: the DBQ out of 7 points, the long essay out of 6, and each short-answer question out of 3. The points students miss most are contextualization, evidence beyond the documents, and complexity (M7).

In the 2025-26 school year our history tutors scored 214 timed DBQs written by Westside students against this rubric. First attempts missed contextualization 46% of the time, evidence beyond the documents 38%, and complexity 83% (M7). After 8 weeks of weekly sessions, the median student gained 2 points on the DBQ (M8).

Both fall on Tuesday, May 4, at 8 a.m. and noon, so both need to be ready before that day. It isn't a conflict. AP Euro and AP Microeconomics are, since both start at noon, and 1 of them moves to late testing.
How early should we start for a May exam?
By February 1. Counting back from May 4, that's 13 weeks of timed practice. Start in the fall if the course grade also needs work.
