History Tutor West Hollywood, CA
The Ladder Methodtutors students from elementary through college. Our business address is 616 North La Cienega Boulevard, West Hollywood, CA 90069. We have been coaching and tutoring for over a decade and have worked with hundreds of clients across the United States, in person and virtually.
Search this phrase and you get directories. They will tell you who is listed. They will not tell you that all 4 AP history exams a Fairfax High student might sit fall inside 1 week in May 2027, or that Los Angeles Unified's own AP figures sit about 20 points below the state.
What We Cover in History
Our published instruction list includes AP European History, History and Civics. Subject tutoring runs 1 to 2 sixty-minute sessions per week, per subject, with a 1-hour minimum weekly commitment. Duration is flexible and depends on the number of subjects and the gap between the starting grade and the target grade. That is the published structure for one-to-one tutoring, and history sits inside it. The wider study skills program runs differently: 2 semesters, 1 to 2 hours a week, usually a 60 to 90-minute weekend session plus a 60 to 90-minute midweek session. Which one a student needs depends on whether the gap is history content or the system around it. For middle and high school students, that second category means time management, study techniques and independent work habits.
How an engagement starts. An initial consultation to assess needs and goals. We then match the client with the coach best suited to their personality and objectives. Sessions run weekly or biweekly and focus on skill development, accountability and application to real situations. We hold regular progress check-ins with students and parents. It ends when the client shows consistent independence and has command of the strategies introduced, not on a renewal date.
Most clients begin noticing improvement within 4 to 8 weeks. Ask us on the call what that is measured against, and hold any tutor you speak to the same question.
The AP History Numbers Los Angeles Unified Publishes
Roughly half of the AP exams taken in Los Angeles Unified earn a qualifying score. Statewide, about 71% do.
Los Angeles Unified reported on 24 February 2026that its students sat 63,046 AP exams in 2024-25, and that more than 31,000 of those exams earned a 3 or higher. California's 2025 figure, reported by EdSource from College Board data in October 2025, was nearly 575,000 qualifying scores out of 812,284 exams.
That is a gap of roughly 20 percentage points between the district and the state.
Two things follow, and they point in opposite directions.
The district's trend is strong. Qualifying scores are up 124% in 5 years, from about 14,000 to more than 31,000. Exam volume is up 52%. Participation among students with disabilities rose 135% over the same period. Nearly 1 in 3 LAUSD high school students now takes at least 1 AP course. More students are attempting harder work, which is the point of an AP program.
The gap is still the reason a family here looks for a tutor. A 3 is the number most public universities want. On the district's own published figures, a student sitting an AP exam at an LAUSD school is closer to a coin flip than a student sitting the same exam elsewhere in California.
That is not a comment on the teachers. It is the arithmetic a parent should have before deciding what to spend.
None of the directory pages ranking for this search will give you either number.
All 4 AP History Exams Fall Inside 1 Week
Fairfax Senior High, at 7850 Melrose Avenue, is the LAUSD school serving much of this area. Its published AP list includes AP United States History, AP World History, AP Human Geography and AP United States Government and Politics, plus AP Macroeconomics and AP Psychology.
Here is what the College Board's 2027 calendardoes to that list:
| Exam | 2027 Date | Session |
|---|---|---|
| AP Human Geography | Monday, May 3, 2027 | Morning |
| AP US Government and Politics | Tuesday, May 4, 2027 | Morning |
| AP World History: Modern | Thursday, May 6, 2027 | Morning |
| AP US History | Friday, May 7, 2027 | Morning |
Four history exams. Five days. All morning sessions.
A student taking APUSH and AP Gov sits both inside 4 days. A student taking World and US History sits both inside 2. There is no room to prepare for the second one after the first is done, which is the plan most families default to without saying so out loud.
What that means for a start date. These exams reward timed writing produced under a clock, and that improves through repetition rather than through a final push. Counting backwards from 3 May, a February start gives a student roughly a dozen weeks of scored practice. An April start buys content review and very little else.
Confirm the dates with your student's AP coordinator before planning around them. Schools administer inside the College Board window, and a school's own page for this is often out of date. Fairfax's AP page still displays May 2022 dates.
California's ethnic studies graduation requirement is not currently in force. Check your student's specific school rather than the state law.
Assembly Bill 101, signed in October 2021, told high schools to offer a one-semester ethnic studies course starting in 2025-26 and made completing one a graduation requirement beginning with the class of 2030. Both pieces were written to depend on state funding.
The 2025 state budget did not include it. Without the appropriation, the statewide mandate never switched on.
What districts did next varies enough that a parent cannot reason from the headline. EdSource reported in October 2025 that Fresno Unified requires 2 semesters and implemented it years ago, that Stockton Unified mandated it without state money, and that San Francisco Unified paused a curriculum it had run since 2010 about 2 weeks before the school year began. Some districts kept the course as an elective. Others dropped it.
What to do about it. Call the counseling office. Ask whether an ethnic studies course is offered at your student's school this year, and whether the school treats it as a graduation requirement regardless of the state's position. Then match the tutor to the actual course. An ethnic studies elective and an AP history course are different animals with different assessments.
We will tell you on the intake call if the course your student is in is not one we should be tutoring.
The Ethnic Studies Requirement, as of September 2026
Ask every candidate the same 4 questions, including us.
Have you scored AP history exams for the College Board, or taught the course as the teacher of record?
History at AP level is scored on a rubric. The points come from things a student can be taught to do on purpose: a defensible thesis, contextualization that actually contextualizes, evidence beyond the documents, and complexity. Someone who has read those exams knows where the points get lost. A generalist knows the content. Both are real purchases. They are not the same purchase.
What is the rate per 60 minutes of one-to-one contact, after I divide any package by the number of sessions?
Monthly and package pricing hides the division. Do it yourself before you compare anyone.
Is the session a full hour, or 50 minutes sold as one?
Ours run 60 minutes.
What happens if I stop after a few weeks?
A monthly figure behind a multi-month minimum is a multi-month decision, not a monthly one.
How to Compare History Tutors
Some of the families who call us should spend the money on something else. Saying so costs us clients and saves everyone 6 weeks.
The work is understood and not turned in. Traditional tutoring works on subject matter. Executive function coaching teaches students how to learn, plan and organize, which is a different job: organization, time management, task initiation, working memory, emotional regulation and cognitive flexibility. If the history is understood and the assignment never gets submitted, look at executive function coaching in West Hollywood instead.
The reading load is the problem. AP World assigns more pages than most 10th graders have been asked to process before. If your student understands what they finish and simply does not finish, the constraint is reading rate and note discipline rather than historical knowledge.
The grade is fine and the anxiety is not. Coaching and tutoring build practical skills. Therapy works on emotional processing, and it is a different profession. We will say so and refer out.
Nobody wants this except you. Accountability someone else purchased is the hardest version of this work.
Who Does the Coaching and Tutoring
Our team comes from backgrounds in education, psychology and learning science. Every coach completes specialized training in The Ladder Method framework, which combines executive functioning, evidence-based learning techniques and emotional awareness. Many hold master's degrees or teaching credentials.
Sessions are customized to the individual student's goals and developmental stage. We specialize in supporting neurodivergent students, particularly those with ADHD, ASD or executive functioning challenges, and approximately 70% of our clients fall into those categories.

When a History Tutor Is the Wrong Hire
Questions We Get Asked
Which history subjects do you cover?
Our published instruction list includes AP European History, History and Civics. Tutoring is subject-specific, so tell us the exact course on the intake call and we will tell you whether it is one we should take.
How often do sessions run?
One to 2 sixty-minute sessions per week, per subject, with a 1-hour minimum weekly commitment. Duration is flexible and depends on the number of subjects and the distance between the current grade and the target.
Do you tutor in person or online?
Both. We have worked with students and adults across the United States in person and virtually.
What does it cost?
We quote after the initial consultation, because the answer depends on the number of subjects, the level and the cadence. Ask us for the rate per 60 minutes of one-to-one contact rather than a monthly figure, and ask every other tutor you are considering the same thing.
When should we start for a May AP exam?
February at the latest for a score change, and earlier if the course grade is also a problem. Rubric writing improves through repeated timed practice rather than a final push. The 2027 AP history exams run 3 to 7 May.
My student has 2 AP history exams. Is that a problem?
It is a scheduling problem more than an academic one. In 2027, AP Human Geography is 3 May, AP Gov is 4 May, AP World is 6 May and AP US History is 7 May. Two of them land inside the same week whichever pair you pick, so the second exam has to be ready before the first one is sat.
Is ethnic studies required for graduation in California?
Not currently. AB 101 made a one-semester course a graduation requirement for the class of 2030 and told schools to offer one from 2025-26, but both were contingent on state funding that the 2025 budget did not include. Some districts require it anyway and others have paused. Check with your student's counseling office rather than the state law.
Is this the same as executive function coaching?
No. Traditional tutoring focuses on subject matter. Executive function coaching teaches students how to learn, plan and organize. If the student understands the material and does not turn it in, you want the second one.
Do you work with students who have ADHD?
Yes. We specialize in supporting neurodivergent students, particularly those with ADHD, ASD or executive functioning challenges, and approximately 70% of our clients fall into those categories.
How long before we see something?
Most clients begin noticing improvement within 4 to 8 weeks. Common changes are higher academic performance, better organization and time management, less procrastination, and more confidence.
How do I start?
An initial consultation to assess needs and goals, then a match to the coach best suited to your student's personality and objectives.
““The Ladder Method has been instrumental in helping my son with ADHD improve his executive functioning skills. His coach Alexis has been kind, encouraging and amazing. She has implemented very well their curriculum created by their carefully thought out outcomes measures. My son is flourishing with this program and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to improve their executive functioning skills. Alexis has also helped with homework and academic areas requiring more EF skills. Thank you Alexis!”
