Nik C.
Nik graduated Columbia summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a bachelors in Film and Media Studies and a minor in Astronomy. Committed to multidisciplinary learning, they thrive on a balance of engagement with STEM and the humanities: Nik studied High-Energy Astrophysics, performed astronomical research at Arizona’s Kitt Peak, and won the Pat Anderson Prize in Film Criticism for their thesis.
As a tutor, Nik is driven by a passion for creative communication and a desire to help students find organizational strategies that click with their personalities. They believe that organizational structures that flow from a student’s personal skills, goals, and inspirations not only make academic success achievable but sustainable and rejuvenating as well. This is where creative communication comes in: a student cannot have a message understood on their behalf. They need to collaborate in receiving it, seizing it and rearticulating it to reach an understanding that belongs to them. As such, Nik focuses on getting students invested in and excited about the process of problem solving rather than narrowly focusing on end solutions.
Outside of tutoring, Nik enjoys filmmaking and playing the piano and French horn. Their work directing films informs their teaching approach. Like working with an actor, working with a student means helping someone else build confidence in their own abilities so, when the critical moment comes, they have within themself everything they need to perform successfully.
