Study Skills Tutor Santa Monica, CA

A study skills tutor teaches your student how to take notes, prepare for exams and manage study time, so test grades match what they know. It's the right fit when your student understands the material in class and still lands at a B or C. The Ladder Method coaches Santa Monica students in person and online, from elementary school through college, and works with adults too.

Most clients notice improvement within 4 to 8 weeks. Santa Monica High (Samohi) holds fall finals December 15-18, 2026, according to the SMMUSD 2026-27 calendar, so a student who starts the week of November 2 gets 6 weeks of coaching before the first exam.

The 4-Question Fit Check: Tutoring, Study Skills or Executive Function Coaching

Our office separates academic help into 4 services, and paying for the wrong one can cost a semester. Answer these 4 questions before you book anyone, including us. The definitions come from our programs page.

  1. Is your student struggling to understand a specific subject? They need subject tutoring from a content expert. Our program for this is Targeted Learning.

  2. Do they understand the material but stall at a B or C, or is the move into middle or high school coming up? That's study skills coaching. Our program for this is Academic Accelerator.

  3. Do they test well but miss homework deadlines or forget to turn work in? That's homework help and accountability: learning the small steps and timing of bigger assignments.

  4. Is your student neurodivergent, or diagnosed with or suspected of a learning difference, and struggling with organization, routines, time management or starting tasks? That's executive function coaching. Our program for this is Executive Functioning Mastery.

If anxiety or low mood is what keeps your student from functioning at school, start with the school counselor, not a coach. SMMUSD's STATS program (Short-Term Achievement & Therapeutic Support) runs 6 to 8 weeks for students in grades 6-12 and pairs individual counseling and group therapy with academic instruction from a credentialed teacher. Coaching builds skills. It isn't therapy.

What a Study Skills Session Covers

We build a customized curriculum for each student. Academic Accelerator students meet their coach twice a week, 1 weekend session and 1 midweek session of 60 to 90 minutes each, and work on the skills below.

  • Note-taking frameworks and recall techniques

  • Exam preparation

  • Time management: time-blocking, reminders and realistic scheduling

  • Organization: visual planners, digital systems and workspace management

  • Task initiation: micro-goals and structured accountability

  • Flexibility: adapting study methods and adjusting to feedback

Programs, Schedules and Minimum Commitment

We publish the structure of all 3 programs so you can compare them with any tutor's offer. These details match our programs page as of October 2026.

  • Targeted Learning (academic tutoring plus study skills) is for students who do well overall but struggle in 1 subject. The typical schedule is 2 sessions of 60 minutes a week, per subject. Duration depends on the number of subjects and the starting and target grades, and you set the weekly commitment with an advisor.

  • Academic Accelerator (study skills plus select executive functioning modules) is for students who need study skills plus time management or planning across more than 1 subject. The typical schedule is 1 weekend and 1 midweek session of 60-90 minutes each. Duration depends on the number of subjects and the starting and target grades, and you set the weekly commitment with an advisor.

  • Executive Functioning Mastery (full executive functioning coaching) is for students struggling with school and daily life. It runs 2-3 semesters with a 2-hour weekly minimum: 1 weekend and 1 midweek session of 60 minutes each.

Santa Monica Classrooms After the Palisades Fire

The January 2025 Palisades Fire put Westside students in new schools mid-year. SMMUSD accepted 135 new students, 54 of them at Samohi, according to Los Angeles Times reporting on data through May 2025. Palisades Charter High's roughly 2,500 students learned online until April 22, 2025, then held classes at Pali South, the former Sears building at 302 Colorado Ave., until returning to their own campus on January 27, 2026.

A school change resets a student's study system: new teachers' expectations, a new place where assignments get posted and, for families who lost their homes, the desk and binders that held the old routine. Pali High students changed settings 3 times in about a year. We suggest study skills coaching at transition times like the move into middle or high school, and a mid-year school change is one.

Who Coaches Santa Monica Students

Our team page lists 14 of our 49 coaches for Los Angeles West, our in-person area for Santa Monica, Brentwood, Pacific Palisades, Venice, West LA and South Malibu. Of those, 2 are Senior Study Skills Coaches. Katherine B. holds a B.S. and an M.Eng. in biomedical engineering from Cornell University, and her favorite study skill is active recall. Ryo F. holds an M.S. in chemistry from UCLA and teaches organization and time management alongside math up to AP Calculus.

Our coaches come from education, psychology and learning science, and every coach completes training in The Ladder Method framework, which founder Candice Lapin built. About 70% of our clients have ADHD, ASD or executive functioning challenges, so the framework is built around structure, flexibility and positive reinforcement.

Questions Santa Monica Parents Ask

Do you coach students in person in Santa Monica?

Yes. Santa Monica is part of our Los Angeles West in-person area, along with Brentwood, Pacific Palisades, Venice, West Los Angeles and South Malibu. Sessions can also run online.

How is study skills coaching different from AVID at Samohi or John Adams?

AVID is a class-based SMMUSD program at John Adams Middle (grades 7-8) and Samohi (grades 9-12) that students apply to join. Study skills coaching is 1-on-1 and built around your student's own classes. A student can do both.

How much does a study skills tutor cost in Santa Monica?

Marketplace study skills tutors average $35-60 an hour, based on Wyzant's national listings. A Los Angeles executive function practice publishes monthly packages that work out to about $150-188 a session. Ask about our program pricing on the free consultation.

How long until we see a change?

Most clients notice improvement within 4 to 8 weeks. A Samohi student who starts the week of November 2 has 6 weeks before fall finals on December 15-18, 2026.

My child changed schools after the Palisades Fire. Is that a study skills problem?

It can be. A school change resets how a student takes notes, tracks assignments and prepares for tests, and we suggest study skills coaching at transition times. If anxiety or grief is the bigger issue, start with the school counselor and ask about SMMUSD's STATS program.

What ages do you work with?

Elementary school through college, plus adults. Younger students work on organization, emotional regulation and task initiation. Middle and high school students work on time management, study techniques and independent work habits. College students and adults work on productivity systems, planning tools and self-motivation.
