Math Tutor West Hollywood, CA
The Ladder Method has tutored students in Los Angeles since 2008, in person and online, from elementary through university. Math is one of the subjects we teach.
Before you book anything with us, read the next section. Fairfax runs free math tutoring three afternoons a week and most families in this zip code do not know it exists.
The UC Math Rule That Changed for Coursework Taken This Fall
Statistics no longer validates Algebra II for University of California admission, starting with coursework completed in fall 2026.
That is live right now, for courses your student is sitting in this term.
Through summer 2026, a student who earned a D or F in Algebra II or Integrated Math III could clear that deficiency by later passing Precalculus, Calculus, Other Advanced Math, Statistics, or Additional Math. Beginning fall 2026, only the first three do it. UC states it directly: Statistics courses will no longer validate Algebra II or Math III, and "Additional Math," a new discipline option, does not validate it either.
The detail that catches families out: the rule keys off when the student completes the higher-level course, not when they apply or enroll. A Statistics course finished in the 2025-26 school year still validates. The same course finished in 2026-27 does not.
UC originally planned this for fall 2025 and delayed it by a year. The requirement itself did not get easier. UC still requires three years of foundational math, and the geometry content cannot be skipped.
The Three-Question Check
Answer these before you hire anyone for a college-bound student.
Is there a D or F in Algebra II or Integrated Math III on the transcript?
Is the plan to clear it with Statistics or an "Additional Math" course?
Will that course be completed in fall 2026 or later?
Three yeses means the plan does not work under the current rule. That student needs Precalculus, Calculus, or another qualifying advanced math course, or a grade repair in the original course.
A tutor telling a junior to take AP Statistics as a substitute for Algebra II this year is working from last year's rules.
Confirm your student's specific case with their school counselor. The transcript and the school's own course coding decide the outcome.
"Algebra 2 Tutor" Means Nothing Until You Name the Sequence
Los Angeles high schools run two different math sequences. Some use the traditional stack of Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2. Others use Integrated Math I, II and III, which covers similar ground in a different order across three years. LAUSD publishes multiple middle school math pathways with acceleration decision points, so two eighth graders at the same school can sit two full years apart.
A tutor who does not ask which one your student is on will teach the right math in the wrong order.
Our first intake question is not what grade they are in. It is which school, which course title exactly as it appears on the schedule, and which textbook.
Ask anyone you are considering: which schools and which textbooks have you worked with this school year? A tutor who names them has taught the sequence. A tutor who says "all of them" has taught none of them.
West Hollywood Is a Residential Zip Code Between Other People's Schools
West Hollywood has one public school inside city limits. West Hollywood Elementary, at 970 North Hammond Street, enrolls 289 students in 2025-26, kindergarten through fifth grade, in Los Angeles Unified. That figure comes from the California Department of Education school profile, CDS code 19647336019871.
That is the entire public K-12 footprint of the city.
Every secondary student who lives here leaves the city for school. Most are zoned to Fairfax Senior High. A large share attend Westside independent schools.
The directory pages ranking for this search treat West Hollywood as a school district with a local tutoring market. It is a residential zip code sitting between several different school systems, each with its own math sequence, its own pacing and its own grading culture.
"Top ten math tutors in West Hollywood" is the wrong list. The right question is who already knows the sequence at the specific school your child attends.
The Fairfax Number Worth Knowing
In 2024-25 Fairfax Senior High enrolled 1,495 students. 23% met state standards in math. 54% met them in English Language Arts. Overall proficiency was 35%, against a 41% California average.
That thirty-one-point gap between English and math describes a specific student: reads well, tests well on the verbal side, and comes apart on multi-step quantitative work.
For that student the bottleneck is often sequence retention and working memory before it is the current chapter. We check that before we start teaching content, because tutoring a chapter a student cannot hold is money spent twice.
How The Ladder Method Works
Every engagement starts with a consultation to assess needs and goals. We then match the student with the tutor best suited to their objectives, rather than assigning whoever has an open slot.
Sessions run weekly or biweekly. Progress check-ins with students and parents run throughout the engagement rather than arriving as a report at the end.
We stop when the student holds the work without us. The Ladder Method treats that as graduation, not as a cancelled subscription.
The company reports that most clients begin noticing improvements within four to eight weeks.
We do not publish a rate on this page. What we charge depends on the course level and whether sessions run in person or online, and we quote it on the consultation call before you commit to anything.
Two questions to ask us, and to ask every tutor you are comparing, so the numbers you collect are comparable:
What is the hourly figure after I divide any package by the number of sessions in it?
What is the minimum term, and what happens if I stop after six weeks?
California does not license tutors. "Math tutor" is a description, not a credential, and a badge on a marketplace profile is not the same screening a school runs.
"Background check" gets used for three different products: a platform's automated name check, a county records search, and a Department of Justice Live Scan run through a school or a licensed program. They are not equivalent. Ask which one you are being shown, and who ran it.
Four questions worth asking anyone on your shortlist. Ask us the same four.
What is the hourly figure after I divide any package by the sessions in it?
Which schools and which textbooks have you worked with this school year?
What screening did the tutor complete, and which organization ran it?
What do you refer out, and to whom?
How to Vet a Math Tutor, Including Us
The Ladder Method's tutors and coaches come from backgrounds in education, psychology and learning science. Many hold master's degrees or teaching credentials. Every one completes training in The Ladder Method framework before working with a student.
The company has worked with students since 2008, across the United States, in person and online, and reports supporting hundreds of clients of all ages. It also reports that roughly 70% of its clients have ADHD, autism, or executive functioning challenges.
We are a tutoring company. We are not a licensed clinical practice and we do not diagnose learning disabilities. When an evaluation is the right next step, we say so and refer out.

Who Does the Tutoring
Questions We Get Asked
Is there free math tutoring in West Hollywood?
Yes, for students at Fairfax Senior High. The school publishes free after-school math tutoring on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. in Room 203. Los Angeles Public Library branches also run drop-in homework help for middle and high school students. Confirm current schedules with the school or branch, since posted hours change by term.
Does AP Statistics still count for the UC math requirement?
Statistics still counts as a math course for University of California admission, but it no longer validates a D or F in Algebra II or Integrated Math III for coursework completed in fall 2026 or later. Only Precalculus, Calculus and Other Advanced Math validate that deficiency now. The applicable rule is based on when the student completes the higher-level course, not when they apply. Confirm any individual case with the school counselor.
What schools do West Hollywood students attend?
West Hollywood has one public school inside city limits: West Hollywood Elementary at 970 North Hammond Street, serving 289 students in kindergarten through fifth grade in 2025-26 as part of Los Angeles Unified. Secondary students leave the city for school. Fairfax Senior High is the LAUSD high school most are zoned to, and a large share of families attend Westside independent schools.
How much does math tutoring cost?
We do not publish a rate. The figure depends on the course level and on whether sessions run in person or online, and we quote it on the consultation call. When you compare tutors, divide any package price by the number of sessions in it, because a monthly figure can hide a higher hourly rate than an hourly quote.
How long before we see a change?
The Ladder Method reports that most clients begin noticing improvements within four to eight weeks. Your student's timeline depends on how far back the gap starts and how much of the current course is running at the same time.
My child is failing Algebra 2. Where should a tutor start?
With a diagnostic rather than with this week's homework. Working backward through the sequence identifies the last topic the student holds cleanly. Teaching the current chapter over an unrepaired gap is the most common way tutoring money gets wasted.
Is math tutoring the same as executive functioning coaching?
No. A math tutor teaches the mathematics. An executive functioning coach builds the system that gets work planned, started, finished and submitted. A student who understands the material and does not turn it in needs the second service.
What ages and courses do you tutor?
Elementary through university. The Ladder Method also offers calculus tutoring in Los Angeles for AP and college-level coursework.
““The Ladder Method has been instrumental in helping my son with ADHD improve his executive functioning skills. His coach Alexis has been kind, encouraging and amazing. She has implemented very well their curriculum created by their carefully thought out outcomes measures. My son is flourishing with this program and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to improve their executive functioning skills. Alexis has also helped with homework and academic areas requiring more EF skills. Thank you Alexis!”
