How Samohi Juniors Scored in Math in 2026

In spring 2026, 56.5% of Samohi 11th graders met or exceeded California's math standard, flat from 2025. 23.0% scored Minimal, the lowest of 4 levels. That's nearly 1 in 4 juniors.

Statewide, 31.9% of 11th graders met the standard. The same Samohi class posted 83.4% in English, so math is where this grade slips.

Samohi's grade 11 math levels in 2026, with the change from 2025, from the CAASPP results on EdSource:

  • Advanced, the highest level: 30.7%, down 4.1 points

  • Proficient: 25.7%, up 4.1

  • Developing: 20.6%, up 0.6

  • Minimal, the lowest level: 23.0%, down 0.6

The top shrank, the middle grew and the bottom barely moved. Across all tested grades, Santa Monica-Malibu Unified (SMMUSD) rose to 61.3% meeting the math standard, up 1.4 points. The state released these results on October 15, 2026, for tests taken in spring 2026.

A district average that high says little about your student. Their own score report does. A Developing or Minimal result means tutoring should start by finding the gap, not with this week's homework.

SMMUSD's Math Grades and Test Scores Disagree

In fall 2024, 79% of SMMUSD students scored at or above benchmark on the Star Math diagnostic. That same semester, high schoolers took home 822 D or F grades, 166 of them in Algebra, Geometry and Algebra II.

The 822 cover every subject, out of 17,839 high school grades (5%). 456 high schoolers, 15% of enrollment, got at least 1 D or F. In middle school, 52 D or F grades came from 8th Grade Math Core alone. Board member Jon Kean's read of the report at the January 2025 meeting: "we have a math problem."

District staff also told the board that grading practices vary across sites and classes. A D can mean a skill gap, missing assignments or both, and each needs a different fix. Before you pay for tutoring, open the online gradebook and count the missing assignments.

The UC Math Rule That Changed This Fall

For courses taken in fall 2026 or later, the University of California no longer lets Statistics or Additional Math courses clear a D or F in Algebra II, according to UC Admissions guidance for counselors. Later courses also stopped clearing a D or F in Geometry. At Samohi, that takes AP Statistics off the list of repair courses.

Through summer 2026, passing a later course in Precalculus, Calculus, Other Advanced Math, Statistics or Additional Math validated a low Algebra II grade. From fall 2026, only the first 3 do. UC first planned the change for fall 2025 and pushed it back a year. The date that counts is when your student takes the later course, not when they apply.

Samohi also offers Introduction to Data Science. Ask your counselor how UC codes it before counting on it to repair anything.

The semester rule still works, and it's easy to miss. In Algebra II or Geometry, a C or better in semester 2 validates a D or F in semester 1. The D still counts in the UC GPA, but the requirement is met. If fall semester ends with a D, spring semester is the repair window.

In 2025-26, 18% of UC first-year students in introductory math courses got a D or F, withdrew or didn't pass, according to UC Regents committee data the Daily Bruin reported on October 22, 2026.

The 3-question UC transcript check

Run it before you pay anyone to plan around a low grade.

  1. Is there a D or F in Algebra II or Geometry on the transcript, or one coming this semester?

  2. Is it the first semester of a year-long course?

  3. Will the planned fix be a later course taken in fall 2026 or after?

Algebra II or Geometry, yes to question 2: a C or better in semester 2 clears it. Start before spring semester begins.

Algebra II, no to question 2 and yes to question 3: the later course has to be Precalculus or calculus. AP Statistics won't count.

Geometry, no to question 2 and yes to question 3: no later course clears it. Plan to repeat the course for a C or better.

A tutor who tells a Samohi junior that AP Statistics will repair a D in Algebra II this year is using last year's rules. Confirm your student's case with a Samohi counselor, because the transcript and UC's course coding decide it.

Samohi's Math Sequence, and Where the Pace Gets Set

SMMUSD's main math fork comes in 7th grade. Students placed in Core 7/8 take Algebra I in 8th grade and Geometry as Samohi freshmen, and can reach AP Calculus as seniors. Students who take Core 7 and then Core 8 start Samohi in Algebra I and reach Algebra II in 11th grade.

The district's pathway chart shows 2 ways to move faster. A student who passes Algebra I can take Geometry in summer school and jump a year. An ultra-accelerated track starts Core 7/8 in 6th grade and can finish with AP Calculus BC or a dual-enrollment college course in 12th grade.

At Samohi, the college-prep sequence runs Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II and Pre-Calculus, with honors sections of Algebra II and Pre-Calculus. Above that sit AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, Multivariable Calculus, AP Statistics and Introduction to Data Science.

The honors track compresses. Honors Pre-Calculus/Calculus A covers precalculus in semester 1 with minimal review of Algebra II, then starts calculus in semester 2. A student who scraped through Algebra II Honors gets less review time at the point where calculus starts.

Graduation asks for less than UC does. Samohi requires 3 years of math (30 units), with at least 1 year in grades 10 to 12, and doesn't name Algebra II. UC and CSU both require it.

For fall 2026, SMMUSD's math committee recommended new textbooks: enVision (Savvas) for K-8, Algebra, Geometry and Algebra II, Cengage texts for Pre-Calculus and AP Calculus, and Math Medic for AP Statistics. Ask which book your student's class uses, and bring it to tutoring so practice matches the class.

What Math Tutoring Costs in Santa Monica

Our rates vary with the tutor's experience, the subject level and whether sessions are in person or online. Ask for them on your free consultation.

To compare quotes, get every price in writing and convert it to an hourly figure. Divide a package price by its number of sessions, then by the hours in each session. A monthly membership can hide a higher hourly rate than an hourly quote. Ask who teaches the session, how many students share the hour and whether the tutor works from your student's textbook.

A lower-cost marketplace tutor fits a student who mostly gets it and needs 1 unit explained. A specialist fits honors and AP courses, a gap 2 courses back or a transcript with a UC problem.

How We Tutor Math

The free 30-minute consultation is where we learn what your student needs and explain how we work, and then we match a tutor. Our process treats the first 3 sessions as a continuous assessment. As your student meets learning targets, we adjust the timeline and the strategy.

  • Most students meet 1 to 3 times a week, in your home or online, and sessions typically run 1 to 2 hours.

  • We track progress and keep families informed, and a team of administrators regularly reviews our tutors and coaches.

  • About 70% of our clients have ADHD, autism spectrum disorder or another executive functioning difference.

Families typically see improvement within 4 to 8 weeks of consistent tutoring. Our tutoring program data shows that students who work with our tutors for a full school year typically improve by at least 1 letter grade in the subjects they target.

When You Shouldn't Hire Us

Paid tutoring isn't always the right first step.

  • 1 homework question: use the library's Brainfuse tutors tonight.

  • A middle schooler slipping in Core 7 or Core 8: ask the teacher first. Someone who sees the work daily can tell you whether it's a skill gap or missed assignments.

  • Math has never worked: years of trouble in every math course, in a student who works hard, calls for a psychoeducational evaluation before tutoring.

  • The math is understood but never turned in: hire an executive functioning coach. That's a planning problem, and more math instruction won't fix it.

  • There's an IEP or 504 plan: read it first and ask what math support is already written in.

Questions Families Ask

Is there free math tutoring in Santa Monica?

Yes. The Santa Monica Public Library's Brainfuse HelpNow tutors work with grades 3 to 12 daily from 1 to 10 p.m., free with a library card. Santa Monica College's Math Lab is free for students in an SMC math class. SMMUSD runs credit recovery summer school.

Do you tutor in person in Santa Monica?

Yes. Santa Monica is part of our Los Angeles West area, with Brentwood, Pacific Palisades, Venice, West Los Angeles and South Malibu. Tutoring is available in your home anywhere in Los Angeles County, or online.

How did Samohi do in math on the 2026 state test?

In spring 2026, 56.5% of Santa Monica High 11th graders met or exceeded the math standard, flat from 2025, against 31.9% statewide. 23.0% scored Minimal, the lowest level.

Does AP Statistics still clear a D in Algebra II for UC?

Not for courses taken in fall 2026 or later. AP Statistics still counts as a year of math, but it no longer validates a D or F in Algebra II. Precalculus and calculus courses still do. Confirm your student's case with a Samohi counselor.

My student got a D in the first semester of Algebra II. What now?

A C or better in semester 2 validates the semester 1 D for UC, and the D stays in the UC GPA. Start tutoring before spring semester begins, with a review of the fall units.

Can a later course clear a D in Geometry?

Not for courses taken in fall 2026 or later. A C or better in semester 2 of Geometry still clears a semester 1 D. Otherwise, the student repeats the course. Confirm the case with a counselor.

Does Samohi require Algebra II to graduate?

No. Samohi requires 3 years of math, with at least 1 year in grades 10 to 12. UC and CSU require Algebra II, so a student can graduate from Samohi without meeting UC or CSU math requirements.

How often does a student meet with a tutor?

Most students meet 1 to 3 times a week, and sessions typically run 1 to 2 hours.

Is math tutoring the same as executive functioning coaching?

No. A math tutor teaches the math. An executive functioning coach builds the system that gets work planned, started, finished and turned in. Ryo F., on our Los Angeles West roster, does both.
