What We Tutor and How Sessions Run
The Ladder Method has spent over a decade tutoring and coaching students, in person and online, using a method developed by our founder, Candice Lapin. Our tutoring staff covers every level of the history courses above, plus Philosophy.
History tutoring runs through our Targeted Learning program: 1 or 2 sessions of 60 minutes a week per subject, with at least 1 hour a week in total. How long it lasts depends on the subject count and the gap between the starting grade and the target grade. Sessions happen at your home or online, and Santa Monica is part of our West Los Angeles in-person area.
The process starts with the discovery call. Then we match your student with a tutor, a step we count among the most important in the process, and the first 3 sessions work as a continuous assessment. We check in with you and your student as the work goes, and we finish once your student works on their own.
About 70% of our clients have ADHD, autism or executive functioning challenges. Executive functioning is our main focus, and we offer subject tutoring for students who need the content as well as the skills.

What Samohi History Asks of Students
Santa Monica High School has about 2,600 students, grouped into Houses of about 560 that stay together through graduation. It offers 22 AP courses with an open-access policy: any student who wants an AP class can take one. The school's 2024 accreditation self-study shows what that did to participation.
Chart: Samohi AP exams rose from 1,654 to 2,075 and AP students from 864 to 1,041 between 2019 and 2023
Between 2019 and 2023, the number of students taking AP rose from 864 to 1,041, and AP exams taken rose from 1,654 to 2,075. Exams grew faster than students, 25% against 20%, so by 2023 the average AP student sat about 2 exams. The 5-year average pass rate was 78%.
Open access changes who sits in an AP history class. A student can enroll without a prior AP course, so the first DBQ may also be their first timed essay built from sources. If that's your student, put the first month of tutoring into source analysis and timed writing.
The district also has an ethnic studies requirement in force, which California doesn't. Santa Monica-Malibu Unified's American Cultures and Ethnic Studies (ACES) graduation requirement began with the class of 2024, and students meet it by passing classes with the ACES designation. The district's 11th-grade history teachers wrote a US History curriculum guide, launched in August 2020, that the district says "fulfilled all of the BOE's ACES graduation requirement." California passed its own requirement in 2021 as AB 101, but it never took effect because the state didn't fund it.
For tutoring, that means ACES material shows up inside US History, next to the AP outline. Bring the class readings to the first session so the tutor works from them, and ask your student's counselor which classes carry the ACES designation.
Samohi students can also take Santa Monica College courses through dual enrollment, and we tutor university students as well.
Santa Monica's Own Primary Sources: The Belmar Lessons
In the 1950s, Santa Monica's Belmar neighborhood was razed through eminent domain, and its residents were displaced to make way for the Civic Center campus. The City of Santa Monica's Belmar History + Art project now tells the history of the African American residents and business owners of Belmar and the surrounding neighborhoods. The project's artist is April Banks, and historian Dr. Alison Rose Jefferson's research informed its permanent exhibit at Historic Belmar Park.

Jefferson's book, Living the California Dream, also became classroom material. Working with the UCLA History-Geography Project, teacher leaders turned her research into lesson plans for grades 3 and 4, 8 and 11, plus Ethnic Studies. They follow California's History-Social Science Framework, and the project posts them on its website.
The 11th-grade lesson asks, "How can memorials help us understand continuity and change in our community?" Continuity and change is one of the 3 kinds of historical reasoning the AP long-essay rubric names, with comparison and causation, and using one to frame the argument earns a point.
A tutor can put the lessons to work in 2 places. The 3rd short-answer question on the 2027 AP history exams always includes a non-text source, such as an image, map or graph, and the Belmar exhibit counts as one: practice describing what it shows and why it was made. On the DBQ, 1 point goes to evidence beyond the documents, and a specific local example, such as Belmar's displacement in the 1950s, can earn it when the prompt covers civil rights or city growth after 1945.
Middle schoolers can start with the 8th-grade lesson, which covers how African Americans in Santa Monica and Los Angeles challenged segregation at beaches in the 1900s.

The 4-Question Tutor Test
Ask every tutor you're considering these 4 questions, and ask us too. The answers separate a history specialist from a generalist.
Have you taught or scored AP history exams, and does your practice material follow the 2027 format? A tutor still drilling the old long-essay choice is training a decision your student won't get to make.
Can you work from my student's class materials, including ACES readings and local sources like the Belmar lessons? Samohi's US History course carries ACES material, so a tutor working only from a national AP outline misses part of the class.
What does each 60-minute session cost once you divide the package price by the number of sessions? Package and monthly pricing hide the hourly figure.
If we end after 4 weeks, what do we owe? A low monthly price with a multi-month minimum commits you for months.
Our answers: sessions run a full 60 minutes, and we quote the rate on the discovery call, because it turns on the subject count, the course level and the weekly schedule. Ask us questions 1 and 4 on that call, and hold us to the same standard.

What the 2027 AP History Exams Mean for Samohi Students
All 3 AP history exams are fully digital in College Board's Bluebook app, so every essay is typed. For May 2027, the free-response section changed. Every short-answer question is now required, and each one includes a source. The long essay is a single prompt with no choice, and the DBQ draws from a wider range of years in the course. College Board's AP history exam update says course content, the multiple-choice section and the scoring rubrics don't change.
How the AP history free-response section changes in May 2027: short answer, long essay and DBQ
College Board's 2027 calendar puts AP European History on Tuesday, May 4 (afternoon session), AP World History: Modern on Thursday, May 6 (morning) and AP US History on Friday, May 7 (morning). Samohi's AP coordinator sets reporting times. With about 2 exams per AP student, plan history prep around your student's whole May schedule, not 1 exam.
2027 AP history exam dates: AP European History May 4, AP World History May 6, AP US History May 7
College Board will release 2 updated practice exams this school year and a 3rd in 2027-28. Released exams from 2026 and earlier still train the old choices, so check which version any practice set follows. For exam week itself, see our AP exam tips.
When a History Tutor Isn't the Answer
Some grades that look like a history problem aren't. We see 3 patterns that need something else.
Homework gets finished but never submitted. That points to executive function: planning, starting and following through. A quick test: if your student can explain the material out loud but the gradebook shows missing work, start with executive function coaching.
In the 2024-25 school year, students who completed at least 2 semesters of our coaching raised their average GPA from 2.65 to 3.82, and students who started below a 3.0 went from 2.18 to 3.68, according to our results page. Results aren't a guarantee.
Student planner with weekly time blocks, a sign that executive function coaching may fit better than tutoring
Assigned chapters pile up unread. If your student understands the reading but can't keep pace with it, work on reading speed and note-taking before content.
The grade is fine, but the stress isn't. Tutoring and coaching teach practical skills, while therapy works on emotional processing. It's a different profession, and if that's what your student needs, we'll say so on the first call and suggest looking for a therapist.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a history tutor cost in Santa Monica?
We give you the rate on the free discovery call, since it turns on the subject count, the course level and the weekly schedule. Whoever you compare, divide any package price by its number of sessions to get the real cost of each hour.
Which history classes do you cover?
US History, World History, European History, Government, Economics, Art History and Philosophy, for regular, honors and AP classes. We also tutor university students.
Can sessions happen at our home in Santa Monica?
Yes, or online. Santa Monica is in our West Los Angeles in-person area, and each session runs 60 minutes, 1 or 2 times a week per subject.
Does Samohi require ethnic studies?
Yes. SMMUSD's American Cultures and Ethnic Studies (ACES) requirement has applied since the class of 2024. Students meet it by passing ACES-designated classes, and the district's 11th-grade US History curriculum was written to fulfill it. Ask your student's counselor which of their classes carry the designation.
How are the 2027 AP history exams different?
Every short-answer question is required and includes a source, and the long essay is a single prompt with no choice. The DBQ draws on a wider range of years. Content, multiple choice and rubrics don't change, and all 3 exams are typed in Bluebook.
What are the 2027 AP history exam dates?

Do you work with students who have ADHD?
Yes. Roughly 70% of our clients have ADHD, autism or executive functioning challenges, and if the real gap is planning, we add executive function coaching alongside tutoring.
How early should a Samohi student start for May?
Early February leaves about 13 weeks of timed, typed practice before the first AP history exam on May 4. If the course grade needs work too, start in the fall.
