EF Coach West Hollywood, CA

The Ladder Method coaches executive function (EF) for Beverly Hills students, elementary through college, and for adults.

None of the executive function coaching pages ranking for this search lists a Beverly Hills street address. We don't have one either. Here's where our sessions happen: in your home in 90210, 90211 or 90212, at our office at 616 North La Cienega Boulevard in West Hollywood, under a mile from the Beverly Hills city line, or by video.

Over a decade of coaching. Hundreds of clients.

How Coaching Works for a Beverly Hills Family

It starts with a consultation and ends when your student runs the system without us.

  1. Consultation. We go through what's happening at school or work and what needs to change. You leave with the monthly cost and a recommended session frequency.

  2. Match. We pair the client with the coach whose style fits their personality and goals. Availability comes second. You meet your coach within 5 business days.

  3. Assessment. The first 3 sessions map how the student plans, starts and finishes work today: backpack, planner, school portal, phone.

  4. Sessions. Weekly or biweekly, 50 minutes each, built on real assignments. Parents get a written progress note every 4 weeks.

  5. Graduation. Coaching ends when the client shows consistent independence with the strategies. There's no renewal to decline.

Most clients notice improvements within 4 to 8 weeks. For scale across the field: in the 2026 JAMA Network Open survey of 481 ADHD coaches, coaches reported a median of 4 sessions a month, 55 minutes each, over 24 weeks of active work per client.

Check What BHUSD Already Provides

If your student attends a Beverly Hills Unified school, call the school's Section 504 coordinator before you pay anyone. Part of what a coach sells may already be free.

BHUSD names a 504 coordinator at every school, and at Beverly Hills High it's an assistant principal. The district lists each one, with a direct extension, on its Student Services page. A 504 plan can write in accommodations such as extended time or regular check-ins with a staff member.

The need is visible at the high school. In 2024-25, 14.4% of Beverly Hills High's 1,173 students received special education services, about 1 in 7, per the school's accountability report. The same report lists 5 academic counselors, roughly 235 students each. A counselor with that load can't hold a weekly planning session with your student. For students with an IEP, the district's Learning Center provides pull-out support.

BHUSD's Independent Study program overlaps with coaching directly. Its students, grades 6 to 12, get a mandatory 1-hour, in-person weekly meeting with their assigned teacher to go over coursework, mentor, tutor and keep organized, plus optional subject tutoring. If that's your student, a private coach can duplicate what the district already runs. We'll build around that meeting or tell you to skip us.

Private schools run on a different rule. They aren't required to write IEPs. Under federal special education law, the public district where the private school sits owes the evaluation, whatever district you live in. For a private school inside Beverly Hills, that's BHUSD. A private school student has no individual right to the full public package, and the district may offer a narrower service plan instead. The California Department of Education sets out the rule. Your child's private school may already have a learning plan. Ask for it before you buy a second one.

How People Pay for It in California

Almost always out of pocket. Only 4.4% of the coaches in the 2026 JAMA survey accepted health insurance.

Insurance, HSA and FSA

Reimbursement tracks who delivers the work. Services from a licensed clinician can sometimes qualify for out-of-network benefits. Coaching from an unlicensed coach almost never does, and we don't bill insurance.

An HSA or FSA is a maybe, with paperwork. A physician or psychologist writes a Letter of Medical Necessity tying the coaching to a diagnosed condition. You pay, then submit the invoice to your plan administrator. We itemize invoices for HSA, FSA and employer plans on request. Limited-purpose and dependent-care FSAs usually don't apply. Get the letter before your first paid month, and confirm with your administrator.

Westside Regional Center

Beverly Hills is Westside Regional Center territory. West Hollywood, next door, belongs to Lanterman. Westside's service area lists Beverly Hills and ZIP codes 90210, 90211 and 90212, and the California Department of Developmental Services lists its office at 777 South Aviation Boulevard, Suite 105, El Segundo, 310-258-4000.

  • Money already inside an approved Self-Determination spending plan can generally go toward executive function coaching.

  • Wanting a coach isn't by itself grounds to enlarge the budget.

  • Support already written into an IEP can make a privately funded coach read as duplicative.

  • We aren't a Regional Center vendor. The family holds the relationship with the Financial Management Service.

Take the funding question to your service coordinator and an independent facilitator.

529 Plans and Employer Programs

Federal law changed in July 2025. 529 money can now pay for K-12 tutoring outside the home when the tutor is a licensed teacher, a current or former teacher at an eligible educational institution, or a subject-matter expert. We've found no IRS guidance on whether executive function coaching counts as tutoring. California didn't adopt the change, so the earnings portion of a K-12 withdrawal is taxed by the state, plus a 2.5% additional California tax. Ask a CPA before you withdraw anything.

Some employer assistance programs accept an invoice. A single email to HR settles it.

The short version for a Beverly Hills family: plan to pay out of pocket, then stack paperwork.

In California, "Coach" Is Not a License

No state license exists for coaching, so anyone can use the title.

The Board of Behavioral Sciences confirmed it in January 2022. Its policy committee recorded that life coaches "are not regulated by a governmental entity" and are prohibited from practicing in the scopes of the professions the Board licenses: marriage and family therapists, clinical social workers, clinical counselors and educational psychologists. A coaching certificate shows training. It grants no permission to diagnose or treat, and what you tell a coach isn't covered by the psychotherapist-patient privilege.

The 2026 JAMA survey is the clearest picture of who does this work. Of 481 ADHD coaches:

  • 89.3% had no professional background in mental health.

  • 72.7% had ADHD themselves or suspected they did.

  • 62.5% completed a training curriculum endorsed by the ADHD Coaches Organization.

  • 90.5% were not receiving clinical supervision.

  • 78.9% referred clients out for formal ADHD evaluation.

  • 53% discussed substance use or addiction in sessions, 48.7% addressed trauma, and 41.6% addressed suicide, abuse or harm to self or others.

That last line is why the questions below matter.

8 Questions to Ask Any Coach, Including Us

  1. Where do sessions happen: a street address, your home, or video only?

  2. Does anyone on the team hold a California clinical license?

  3. Did you complete an ACO-endorsed training curriculum? 62.5% of coaches have.

  4. Who supervises your work? 90.5% of coaches have no clinical supervision.

  5. What do you refer out, and to whom by name? 78.9% of coaches refer for formal ADHD evaluation. A coach who refers nothing is the outlier.

  6. What happens if trauma or substance use comes up? Roughly half of coaches handle each inside sessions: 48.7% trauma, 53% substance use. Decide if you want that.

  7. What does a month cost, in writing, before this call ends?

  8. Has my child's 504 plan or school learning plan already been used?

Our answers to all 8 are on the consultation call, in writing if you want them.

When Coaching Is the Wrong PurchaseInsurance, HSA and FSA

Some families who call us should spend the money somewhere else. We'll say so on the first call.

Your student is in BHUSD Independent Study. The weekly 1-hour meeting already covers organization. Use it for a term, then call us if it isn't enough.

There's no diagnosis and the pattern is new. Get an evaluation first. Coaching builds systems, but it can't explain why they keep failing, and a private school in Beverly Hills doesn't remove your right to a BHUSD evaluation.

The problem is anxiety, depression, disordered eating, substance use or self-harm. See a licensed clinician, because missed deadlines are sometimes the symptom. We don't treat any of it.

The gap is content. A student who can't do the chemistry needs a chemistry tutor. We teach students how to plan, start and finish; a tutor teaches the subject.

What We Measure, and What It Showed

We track 4 numbers for every student, from intake through 18 months after graduation. The 2024-25 results are below, limits included.

The 4 numbers: missing or late assignments per week, pulled from the school portal; school days per week the student uses a planner without a prompt; a weekly parent rating of homework conflict, from 1 (none) to 5 (every night); and term grades.

  • 160 students started between September 2024 and June 2025, and 138 stayed at least 12 weeks.

  • Median missing or late assignments fell from 5 a week at intake to 1 by week 12.

  • Unprompted planner use on 4 or more school days rose from 18% of students to 71%.

  • Parent-rated homework conflict fell from 4.1 to 2.3.

  • Of 52 students who graduated in 2023 and answered our 18-month check-in, 44 still ran the system without weekly sessions.

What these numbers don't show: 22 of the 160 left before week 12, most often over scheduling. Coaches log the counts and parents supply the rating. No outside evaluator has reviewed any of it. Ask us for the same 4 numbers on your own student, every 4 weeks.

The Skills We Coach and the Strategies We Use

Executive function is the set of mental skills you use to plan a task, start it and finish it. Most pages define the skills and stop. Here's what we do about each one:

  • Organization: visual planners, digital systems and workspace setup.

  • Time management: time-blocking, reminders and realistic scheduling.

  • Task initiation: micro-goals and structured accountability.

  • Working memory: note-taking frameworks and recall techniques.

  • Emotional regulation: mindfulness and reflection routines that reduce overwhelm.

  • Cognitive flexibility: adapting study methods and adjusting to feedback.

Younger students start with organization, emotional regulation and task initiation. Middle and high school students work on time management, study techniques and independent work habits. College students and adults build productivity systems, planning tools and self-motivation strategies. Our executive functioning and study skills coaching overview shows how each program runs.

Who We Work With in Beverly Hills

Elementary through college, plus adults. About 70% of our clients have ADHD, autism spectrum conditions or executive functioning challenges. If ADHD is the main question, see our page on ADHD coaching in Beverly Hills.

Last school year we coached 34 Beverly Hills students: 19 at BHUSD schools and 15 at independent schools. The 2 groups need different plans. A BHUSD student may arrive with a 504 plan and a portal full of teacher comments, and we build on both. An independent school student often has a school-written learning plan, 1 or 2 tutors and a schedule that fills up after 3 p.m. We coordinate with all of it, so your student isn't answering to a 4th adult who repeats the other 3.

Adults bring work projects, deadlines and the balance between professional and personal life. Our coaching for adults is built around that work.

What Clients Tell Us Changes

The changes clients report most often: higher academic performance, better organization and time management, less procrastination and anxiety, and more confidence and self-reliance.

From our caseload:

  • A middle school student who struggled to finish homework learned to manage assignments on his own with our color-coded planner system and visual scheduling. He went from C's to the honor roll.

  • A high school student with ADHD used time-blocking and an accountability structure. Her late work dropped and her GPA rose.

  • A college freshman overwhelmed by new independence learned to break large projects into steps, and both grades and confidence improved.

  • An adult client used the framework to structure work projects, manage deadlines and restore balance between work and home.

"I have used The Ladder Method for over a year now. They are caring, amazing to work with, and most important, they get results. My 5th grader went from a C to an A student." Parent review, Yelp

Who Does the Coaching

Our coaches come from education, psychology and learning science. 11 of our 16 Los Angeles coaches hold a master's degree or a teaching credential. Every coach completes training in The Ladder Method framework, which combines executive functioning, evidence-based learning techniques and emotional awareness. None of our coaches are licensed therapists, and we don't present coaching as treatment.

The framework comes from Candice Lapin, founder and CEO of The Ladder Method and author of Parenting in the Age of Perfection. You can meet our coaching team.

Questions Beverly Hills Families Ask

Do you have an office in Beverly Hills?

No. Our nearest office is 616 North La Cienega Boulevard in West Hollywood, under a mile from the Beverly Hills city line. We also coach in your home in 90210, 90211 or 90212, or by video. We confirm which one you're booking before you start.

What does executive function coaching cost?

We give you the monthly cost on the consultation call, in writing, before the call ends. It depends on session length, sessions per month and whether sessions happen in your home. Coaches in the 2026 JAMA survey reported a median of 4 sessions a month over 24 weeks, so ask every practice for the monthly figure, the session length and the minimum term.

Will insurance pay for it?

Almost never for coaching. 4.4% of ADHD coaches in the 2026 JAMA survey accepted health insurance. An HSA or FSA can sometimes reimburse it with a Letter of Medical Necessity. Work billed by a licensed clinician follows different rules.

Should we go to BHUSD first?

If your student attends a BHUSD school, yes. Call the school's 504 coordinator. Students in the district's Independent Study program already get a weekly 1-hour meeting that covers organization.

My child is at a private school. Does BHUSD owe us anything?

If the private school is in Beverly Hills, BHUSD owes a free evaluation for a suspected disability, even if you live outside the district. Your child has no individual right to the full public package, and the district may offer a narrower service plan. If the school sits inside Los Angeles Unified, the evaluation falls to LAUSD.

Can Westside Regional Center fund it?

Sometimes. Beverly Hills is Westside Regional Center territory. Money already inside an approved Self-Determination spending plan can generally go toward coaching, but wanting a coach doesn't by itself justify a bigger budget. Ask your service coordinator.

Is this the same as tutoring?

No. A tutor teaches the subject. We teach students how to plan, start, finish and submit the work. If your student can't do the chemistry, hire a chemistry tutor.

Is this the same as therapy?

No, and the difference is legal. Therapy in California requires a license from the Board of Behavioral Sciences or the Board of Psychology. Coaching requires none. Therapy works on emotional processing. We work on practical skills, time management and follow-through. More on how executive function coaching differs from therapy.

Do you need a diagnosis to start?

No. Most routes to help paying for it, including HSA reimbursement and Regional Center funding, require documented eligibility. You can start without a diagnosis. Getting help with the bill usually needs one.

How long before we see a change?

Most clients notice improvements within 4 to 8 weeks. The median engagement in the 2026 JAMA survey ran 24 weeks.
