Alex P
Alex holds a MA in English from CSU Northridge and a BA in Literature from UC Santa Cruz. His awards and distinctions include the Ina Coolbrith Memorial Poetry Prize, Kenneth Andrew Gram Memorial Scholarship, and CSUN Pedagogy Fellowship. His long-term goal is to pursue a PhD and become a university professor.
As both an educator and writer, his mission in life is to guide individuals towards a dynamic literacy. In his tutoring sessions, he is focused on mentoring students towards honest and purposeful writing along with spirited and diligent reading habits. His pedagogy revolves around structuring lessons as a dialogue, where both student and educator cooperate in the learning process. His overall approach is getting students to consider education not as an obstacle to get over but rather as an opportunity to get better. This mentality boosts their confidence as scholars while also stimulating their curiosity to learn. During sessions, Alex’s approach includes assigning freewrites to spur creativity, providing encouragement for every critique, and offering alternatives rather than dictating single solutions. He considers a successful session as one where the student has a greater comprehension of not only the material but also how their own words matter.
Alex is also a published fiction writer with a goal to write a novel, and his favorite genres to read and write in are fantasy, sci-fi, and horror. To unwind, he enjoys running, cycling, and hiking outdoors. He also has years of experience as an animal caretaker at both a rescue and dog walking service. Coming from a family of educators and hard workers, he counts his parents and sister as being his biggest inspirations.
