What The Ladder Method Does In West Hollywood
We teach people how to plan work, start it, hold it in mind, and finish it. That is the whole job. It is the same executive functioning coaching program we run everywhere, delivered from the West Hollywood office. It is not tutoring. A tutor teaches the subject. We teach how to learn, plan and organize, so the student can do the subject without us. It is not therapy. Therapy works on emotional processing. We work on practical skill building, time management and goal execution, and we refer out when the presenting problem is clinical. We serve elementary students, middle and high school students, university students, and working adults. Each group gets a different framework. Younger students work on organization, emotional regulation and task initiation. Middle and high school students work on time management, study technique and independent work habits. College students and adults work on productivity systems, planning tools and self-motivation. Coaching happens in person in West Hollywood or online, and we tell you which one you are booking before you start.
How To Vet An Executive Functioning Coach, Including Us
In California, "coach" is not a license. Anyone can use the word. The Board of Behavioral Sciences licenses therapists and the Board of Psychology licenses psychologists. Neither board regulates coaching. The ICF and the ADHD Coaches Organization are membership bodies, not licensing boards.
The 2026 JAMA Network Open survey of 481 ADHD coaches is the clearest picture of who is working in this field:
89% had no professional mental health background.
63% had completed a curriculum endorsed by the ADHD Coaches Organization.
72% had ADHD themselves or suspected they did.
80% said they would refer a client out for formal diagnosis.
About 50% reported addressing substance use or trauma despite limited training in either.
About 42% reported addressing suicide, abuse, or harm to self or others.
Those last two numbers are the reason to ask hard questions. Utah created a fund in March 2025 to investigate coaches treating mental health conditions without a license. California has not done the same.
Five questions worth asking any coach on your list. Ask us the same ones.
What training did the coach complete before taking a first client, and in what method?
What is the minimum term, and what happens if I stop at week six?
What do you refer out, and to whom?
Are sessions in person in 90069 or 90046, or is this video with a city name on the page?
How is progress measured, and when do I see it in writing?
Reasonable red flags, per the Knowable Magazine reporting on that survey: a guaranteed outcome, fewer than 40 hours of training, an inability to explain the line between coaching and therapy, and no method the coach can describe in one sentence.
When Coaching Is The Wrong Purchase
Some people who call us should spend the money somewhere else. Saying so costs us clients and saves everyone six wasted weeks.
Get a diagnostic evaluation first if there is no diagnosis and the pattern is new. Coaching builds systems. It does not identify why the systems keep failing. A neuropsychological evaluation answers a different question and usually comes first.
See a licensed clinician if the presenting problem is anxiety, depression, disordered eating, substance use, or self-harm. Missed deadlines are sometimes a symptom rather than the condition. None of our coaches are licensed therapists and we do not present coaching as treatment.
Hire a subject tutor if the gap is content. A student who cannot do the chemistry does not need a better planner. Different purchase, and we will say so on the consultation.
Use the school first if an IEP or 504 is already in place. Ask what executive functioning support is written in before paying for a second version of it.
The Skills We Work On And The Strategies We Use
Executive functioning is the set of 8 to 12 mental skills people use to plan a task and complete it. Below are the 12 we work on, and the named strategy behind each one where we run a specific method.
| Skill | What It Is | The Strategy We Use |
|---|---|---|
| Organization | Systems that keep materials findable | Visual planners, digital systems, workspace management |
| Time Management | Judging how long something will take | Time-blocking, reminders, realistic scheduling |
| Task Initiation | Starting without a prompt | Micro-goals to build momentum and structured accountability |
| Working Memory | Holding information while you use it | Note-taking frameworks and recall techniques |
| Emotional Regulation | Responding proportionately to feedback | Mindfulness and reflection to reduce overwhelm |
| Flexibility | Adjusting when the plan changes | Adapting study methods and working with feedback |
| Planning | Sequencing steps and setting priorities | Built into the individual plan from the assessment |
| Task Management | Breaking a project into ordered micro-steps | Built into the individual plan from the assessment |
| Self-Monitoring | Judging your own performance | Built into the individual plan from the assessment |
| Focus and Attention | Sustaining and switching attention | Built into the individual plan from the assessment |
| Meta-Cognition | Knowing how you learn best | Built into the individual plan from the assessment |
| Goal-Directed Perseverance | Continuing past an obstacle | Built into the individual plan from the assessment |
What West Hollywood Looks Like As A Caseload
Two client populations here, and they do not look alike.
Adults. West Hollywood runs on production call times, restaurant doubles and freelance gaps, plus a lot of late diagnosis. Calendar advice written for a 9-to-5 fails immediately against a schedule that changes every Sunday night. Adult coaching here works on productivity systems, planning tools and self-motivation rather than homework routines.
Students. The neighborhood's main public high school is Fairfax Senior High at 7850 Melrose Avenue, LAUSD. It enrolled 1,495 students in 2024-25. On state assessments that year, 35% met standards overall against a 41% California average. English Language Arts came in at 54%. Math came in at 23%. Those figures are from California Department of Education assessment data for 2024-25.
That gap between 54% in English and 23% in math is the shape of the problem we get called about most: a student who reads fine and cannot hold a multi-step math or science sequence together long enough to finish it. That is a working memory and task management problem before it is a math problem.

Who Does The Coaching
Our coaches come from education, psychology and learning science. Many hold master's degrees or teaching credentials. Every coach completes specialized training in The Ladder Method framework, which combines executive functioning, evidence-based learning techniques and emotional awareness.
The method was written by Candice Lapin, founder of The Ladder Method.
You do not work with one person alone. The assigned coach works with the Student Success team, which is why progress gets reviewed by more than the person delivering the sessions.
None of our coaches are licensed therapists, and we do not present coaching as treatment.
Questions We Get AskedWhat is Executive Functioning?
Do you have an office in West Hollywood?
Yes. 616 North La Cienega Boulevard, West Hollywood, CA 90069. Coaching is available in person or online, and we confirm which one you are booking before you start.
Will insurance pay for it?
Almost never. Coaching is treated as education rather than a medical service. An HSA or FSA can sometimes reimburse it when a physician or psychologist writes a Letter of Medical Necessity tied to a diagnosis. Confirm with your plan administrator first.
Can a California Regional Center fund it?
Sometimes. West Hollywood is served by Frank D. Lanterman Regional Center. Funds already inside an approved spending plan can often be directed to coaching, but wanting a coach is not by itself grounds to increase a Self-Determination Program budget, and support already written into an IEP can make a second privately funded coach look duplicative. Ask your service coordinator and an independent facilitator.
Is this the same as tutoring?
No. A tutor teaches the subject. We teach the system that gets work planned, started, finished and handed in. If the gap is subject knowledge, hire a subject tutor.
Is this the same as therapy?
No, and the distinction is legal. Therapy in California requires a license from the Board of Behavioral Sciences or the Board of Psychology. Coaching requires no license. We build skills and accountability. We do not treat anxiety, depression or trauma, and we refer those cases out. We go into more detail on how executive function coaching differs from therapy.
Do you need a diagnosis to start?
No. Coaching does not require one. Worth knowing: the routes that reduce what you pay out of pocket, including HSA reimbursement and Regional Center funding, generally do require documented eligibility.
How long before we see something?
Most clients begin noticing improvement within 4 to 8 weeks.
What ages do you work with?
Elementary through college, plus adults.
Do you work with ADHD and autistic clients?
Yes. About 70% of our clients have ADHD, are autistic, or have executive functioning challenges.
