How Do Dyslexia And Executive Function Challenges Overlap?

Dyslexia and executive function challenges overlap in 3 different ways, and which one you are looking at changes what you should do next. Sometimes the reading effort is consuming the working memory. Sometimes a slow processing speed sits underneath both. Sometimes a second condition is in the room. Most articles on this describe 1 blurry overlap and hand you the same 5 strategies. Those strategies are fine. They are also the wrong first move for a lot of the children who get them.

Here is what the research measured, what it did not, and how to work out which version you have in front of you.

The Short Answer

The overlap is real, and it is smaller than the internet suggests.

Across 65 studies covering 10,173 children and adolescents, with a weighted mean age of 8.8 years, Ober and colleagues at the City University of New York found correlations between executive function measures and word decoding in the .28 to .34 range. Small to moderate, and stable across sample and task differences. A correlation near .3 means executive function accounts for roughly 9 percent of the variation in how well children decode words. The rest is something else, and in dyslexia most of that something else is phonological.

Executive function matters to reading. It is not what dyslexia is.

Prevalence is worth a sentence, because almost every page on this topic quotes a figure and almost none of them sources it. In the 2022-23 school year, 7.5 million US students received special education services under IDEA, 15 percent of public school enrollment, and specific learning disabilities was the largest disability category at 32 percent of them. Dyslexia is not counted separately in that figure. The estimates you will find online run from 5 percent to 17 percent, and they disagree because they are counting different things.

That distinction runs through everything below. A weak executive function profile in a dyslexic child can be a separate difficulty, a side effect of the reading effort, or an artifact of how the testing was done. Each one calls for a different response, and the popular advice only fits 1 of them.

What Executive Function Actually Covers

Executive function is the set of mental controls that let a child hold a goal, plan a route to it, start, and correct course. The standard breakdown is working memory, inhibition and cognitive flexibility, with planning, organization, task monitoring and self-regulation sitting on top of those 3.

Two pieces matter most in dyslexia. Working memory, because reading a sentence you cannot decode automatically will eat it. And processing speed, which is not an executive function in the strict sense but behaves like the floor the others stand on. Reading is where both become visible, because reading is the one school task that loads everything at once.

There Are 3 Overlaps, Not 1

The cluster of articles on this topic describes a single blurry relationship. The research describes at least 3 separate ones, with different causes and different first moves. Here they are in the order you should rule them out.

Overlap 1: the reading effort is eating the working memory

This is the most common version, and it is a load problem rather than a damage problem.

Working memory holds about a sentence worth of material at a time. When a child decodes automatically, almost none of that capacity goes to the words, and the rest is free for meaning, instructions and self-monitoring. When decoding is effortful, the words take the capacity first. What is left has to run comprehension, hold the 3-step instruction, and track whether the answer makes sense. Often there is not enough.

From the kitchen table this looks exactly like an executive function problem. The child cannot follow multi-step directions, loses the thread of the assignment, forgets what the paragraph said by the end of it, and stops before starting anything with heavy text.

The tell is that it moves with language demand. Ask the same child to plan a Lego build, run a soccer drill, or organize a card game and the executive function looks fine. Put a worksheet in front of them and it collapses. Load-driven executive function difficulty tracks the reading, not the clock and not the setting.

This is also why fluency scores are the ones to watch. Accuracy measures whether the child gets the word right eventually. Fluency measures whether the word arrives fast enough to leave capacity for anything else. A child can read accurately and still have nothing left over, which is exactly the profile that gets described as disorganized.

Overlap 2: processing speed sits underneath both

Some of the overlap is not one thing causing the other. It is a shared part.

Lauren McGrath, Bruce Pennington, Erik Willcutt, Richard Olson and colleagues, writing in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry in 2011, tested this with a structural model of reading disability, ADHD, and the cognitive skills underneath both. Processing speed was the only cognitive variable with a unique relationship to both. And when processing speed was included in the model, the correlation between reading and inattention dropped to non-significance. In their data, processing speed accounted for most of the observed link between reading difficulty and inattentive behavior.

That finding does 2 useful things for a parent.

It explains why a child can look inattentive in class and not have ADHD. Slow processing means the instruction is still being decoded when the class has moved on, and the behavior that follows looks like distraction.

It also gives you a specific number to ask for. Rapid automatized naming is the timed measure that tracks processing speed most directly in a reading profile, and it is routinely administered and routinely skipped over in the summary. If the rapid naming score sits well below the accuracy score, speed is doing real work in this child's difficulties.

Overlap 3: there is a second condition in the room

ADHD and dyslexia co-occur often enough that the right move is to check rather than assume. The published co-occurrence estimates disagree with each other by a wide margin, which is itself worth knowing: figures between 20 and 50 percent circulate depending on which direction the study measured and how it defined each condition. No single number in this space is settled, and any page quoting one as fact is quoting a range it did not read.

What separates the profiles is where the difficulty shows up.

In ADHD, attention and self-regulation problems travel with the child. They appear at dinner, at soccer practice, in the car, and in subjects with no reading in them.

In dyslexia without ADHD, the same behaviors cluster around reading and writing demand and thin out elsewhere.

The McGrath finding above cuts against assuming too much from the label. If processing speed accounts for most of the observed link between reading difficulty and inattentive behavior, then some of what gets read as ADHD in a struggling reader is speed, and some of what gets read as a reading problem in an inattentive child is the same variable seen from the other side. The diagnosis is worth having. It is a weaker guide to what the reading needs than a reading measure is.

That matters for what you buy. A second diagnosis changes the medical conversation. It does not change the fact that the reading needs reading instruction.

How to tell which overlap you are looking at

None of this replaces an evaluation, and a psychologist reading a full battery will see things this table cannot. It is a way to arrive at that appointment with better questions.

Children arrive with more than 1 of these. The point of sorting them is sequence, not exclusivity: it tells you what to fix first.

Which Executive Function Skills Are Affected, and Which Are Not

The cluster of articles on this topic names the same 3 every time: working memory, organization, task initiation. The published data supports the first, partly supports the second, and does not support the third as a general feature.

James Smith-Spark and colleagues ran both a self-report measure and lab tasks on the same 61 adults, 31 with dyslexia and 30 without, matched on age and IQ, mean age 24. On the BRIEF-A self-report, the dyslexia group scored higher overall for executive function problems. Broken into scales, 3 held up after correction: Working Memory, Plan/Organize, and Task Monitor. 6 did not: Initiate, Organization of Materials, Inhibit, Shift, Emotional Control and Self-Monitor. The Metacognition index differed sharply between groups. The Behavioral Regulation index did not differ at all.

On the lab tasks the same group showed a set-shifting cost of 39 seconds against 15 seconds in controls, roughly 2.5 times higher, and lower working memory updating scores on both a verbal and a visuospatial span task.

Two things follow from that, and neither appears anywhere else in this topic.

Emotional regulation is not part of the dyslexia executive function profile in this data. When a dyslexic child melts down over homework, the most likely account is the homework, not a regulation deficit. That changes the intervention from self-regulation training to reducing the reading load.

Task initiation, the third most repeated claim in this category, did not separate the groups. Difficulty starting a reading-heavy assignment is a rational response to a task that is hard and slow. It is not evidence of a broad initiation deficit, and treating it as one sends families to the wrong intervention.

One caveat, because it matters. That study is on adults, and the pattern should not be assumed to hold identically in an 8-year-old. It is still the most detailed scale-by-scale evidence available on this question, and it points somewhere other than where the advice in this category points.

In children the picture is broader. Pamela Varvara and colleagues compared 60 children with developmental dyslexia against 65 typical readers on a full neuropsychological battery and found deficits in verbal fluency, visual-spatial and auditory attention, spoonerism, verbal and visual short-term memory, and verbal working memory. Their predictive analysis found spoonerism, a phonological manipulation task, explained word and non-word reading better than any other measure in the set. The executive function deficits were real and the phonological measure still did most of the explaining.

Why the Executive Function Testing Can Be Wrong About Your Child

Two measurement problems sit inside almost every executive function finding for a dyslexic student, and no page in this category explains either one.

The first is task modality. Booth, Boyle and Kelly's meta-analysis of executive function performance in children with reading difficulties found that effect sizes varied as a function of the assessment task, with task modality and definitional criteria moderating how large the deficit looked. Many standard executive function tasks are delivered in words and answered in words. Give a verbally loaded working memory task to a child with a language-based reading difficulty and the score reflects both things. The deficit looks bigger than it is.

Ask which executive function tasks in the report were verbal and which were visual, and compare the 2 sets. A child who is weak on verbal working memory and average on visuospatial working memory is telling you something specific.

The second problem is that questionnaires and tasks disagree. In the Smith-Spark study, correlations between the BRIEF-A ratings and the lab task performance were limited across nearly every scale. The same participants, 2 measures of the same construct, and little agreement. Rating scales capture how executive function feels in daily life. Performance tasks capture what it does under controlled conditions. Both are informative and they are not substitutes.

Most school reports contain rating scales only, because they are cheap and fast. If your child's executive function conclusion rests on a teacher and parent questionnaire and nothing else, it is one half of the picture.

When Executive Function Coaching Is the Wrong Purchase

Executive function coaching does not teach a child to read.

If the bottleneck is decoding, the intervention with the evidence behind it is structured literacy: explicit, systematic, cumulative instruction in phonemes, letter-sound correspondence and syllable patterns, delivered by someone trained in it. Planners, checklists and timers make a decoding problem easier to live with. They do not move it.

The mismatch is common because the symptoms present as organization. A child forgets the homework, loses the sheet, will not start the reading, and cannot finish the assignment. That reads as an executive function problem to every adult watching, and a coach is easier to buy than a reading specialist.

Signs you may have bought the wrong thing:

  • The systems work. The planner is filled in, the routine holds, and the reading is still slow and effortful after 3 months.

  • Progress shows up in every subject except the ones with heavy text.

  • The child performs well on untimed comprehension and poorly on anything timed.

  • Nobody has measured decoding accuracy, fluency or rapid naming in the last 18 months.

The cost is a school year, and school years matter here. Reading intervention gets harder and slower the later it starts.

The people selling in this space take opposite positions on this and nobody points it out. Cascadia CCC's position is that executive function interventions should not be reading strategies. WPS Publishing's position is that decoding work is the executive function intervention. Both are partly right, and the rule that sorts them is the one thing neither states: if decoding is not automatic, reading instruction comes first and executive function support runs alongside it, not instead of it. If decoding is automatic and the child is still disorganized, the executive function work is the main event.

Before you buy either, put 3 questions to the provider: is my child's bottleneck decoding or organization, what are you basing that on, and what would change your answer. Any provider who cannot answer all 3, including this one, has not looked closely enough yet.

What to Do First, in Order

  1. Get the reading measured properly: decoding accuracy, reading fluency, and rapid automatized naming. Accuracy alone will miss a slow, accurate reader, the most commonly missed profile in dyslexia.

  2. Start structured literacy if decoding is not automatic. Everything else is a support around it.

  3. Read the executive function section of the report with 2 questions in hand: which tasks were verbal, and was anything measured besides a rating scale.

  4. Cut the reading load in the subjects that are not reading. Text-to-speech for science and social studies, audio versions of assigned books, instructions given aloud as well as in writing. This is the fastest way to see how much of the difficulty was load.

  5. Wait 3 months, then look again. If the organization problems shrink once the reading load drops, they were load. If they hold steady across every setting and across every subject, you are looking at the signs of an executive function difficulty in its own right.

  6. Address the executive function skills that stay. Working memory strategies, planning routines and self-monitoring, taught explicitly and practiced on real schoolwork rather than on exercises. These are not the same thing as study skills, and the distinction changes who you hire.

Step 4 is the one families skip, and it is the cheapest diagnostic move available. Most of it is free and built into devices you already own.

Two notes on process. Extended time is the default request and the most over-prescribed: it helps a slow, accurate reader and does very little for a child who cannot decode the passage. And a formal plan follows the evaluation, so the evaluation is the piece to schedule first. The same logic applies to classroom support for ADHD, where the accommodation only works if it matches the mechanism.

When an Executive Function Coach Is the Right Call

Bring in executive function coaching when the reading has an intervention in place and the organization, planning and follow-through are still behind after a term of it. That sequence matters, because a coach working on planning while decoding is unaddressed is working on the second problem.
