What ADHD Coaching Covers and What It Leaves to Your Doctor
ADHD coaching is weekly practice on the tasks ADHD makes hard. At The Ladder Method, that means the 12 executive function skills we teach, from organization, time management and task initiation to working memory, emotional regulation and flexibility. In daily life it looks like starting homework without a reminder, remembering instructions, guessing how long an assignment will take, and breaking a big project into steps that fit a school night.
Coaching, therapy and medication do different jobs. A coach doesn't diagnose ADHD or adjust medication; your child's doctor or a psychologist handles those. Candice Lapin walks through how the 3 fit together in her guide to ADHD coaching after a late diagnosis.
Start with a licensed clinician if your child is in a mental health crisis or talking about self-harm, and the same goes for substance use. In an emergency, call or text 988. In a national survey of 481 ADHD coaches published in JAMA Network Open in January 2026, coaches reported discussing crises, substance use and medication with clients, yet 89.3% had no professional background in mental health.
How The Ladder Method Works for ADHD
Every Ladder Method coach teaches from the curriculum Candice Lapin built, so a family in Santa Monica gets the same method as a family in New York or Chicago. The method has 3 parts: executive functioning skills, a positive mindset, and sustainable habits and routines.
Executive functioning skills
Coaches teach time management, task prioritization, organization and planning, memory techniques, and study and note-taking methods. The curriculum is modular, so lessons match your child's age and stage.
Sustainable habits and routines
Coaches turn new skills into routines your child keeps using on their own. The goal is independence: habits that keep running after coaching ends.
Each student has a dedicated lead coach backed by a team. An assessment coach builds the starting plan with our Student Success department, and your coach and that team keep reviewing progress together.
Positive mindset
This part covers self-motivation and focus training, plus goal setting and accountability.
In-Home ADHD Coaching in Santa Monica
Santa Monica sits in our Los Angeles West service area, along with Brentwood, Venice, Pacific Palisades, West Los Angeles and South Malibu. The Ladder Method started in Los Angeles in 2008 and still coaches families in their homes there, so Santa Monica sessions happen in your home or online.
Middle and high school students
Santa Monica-Malibu Unified posts middle and high school grades and report cards in the Aeries Parent Portal. Bring a recent Aeries printout to your consultation so the coach starts from current grades. Our coaching programs page covers what middle school and high school coaching include.
Santa Monica College and university students
Santa Monica College has been No. 1 among California community colleges for transfers to the University of California for 35 straight years, sending 995 students to UC in 2024-25, including 437 to UCLA. SMC's Center for Students with Disabilities lists ADHD/ADD among the conditions it serves, so students with documentation can request accommodations. Coaching covers what accommodations don't: a weekly plan that fits classes and work hours around transfer deadlines. Read about our university coaching program.
Adults
Our adult program focuses on professional and personal success, with sessions at home or online.

The 6-Question ADHD Coach Check
ADHD coaching has no licensing requirement. In the 2026 survey, 85% of coaches held no professional license and 90.5% worked without formal clinical supports. Ask any coach these 6 questions before you hire, us included.
What ADHD-specific training have you finished? In the survey, 62.5% of coaches completed an ADHD coach-led curriculum before they started practicing. Our answer: every coach is trained in executive functioning frameworks and evidence-based study skills, using our founder's curriculum.
What share of your clients have ADHD? A coach who mostly works on careers may not know how ADHD shows up in homework or deadlines. Our answer: roughly 70% of our clients are neurodivergent.
Have you coached my child's age group? A 12-year-old needs a parent in the loop, and a 30-year-old usually doesn't. Our answer: we run separate programs for middle school, high school, university and adult clients.
How will we know it's working? Without a measure, "going well" can mean anything. Our answer: scheduled check-ins and evaluations with your coach and our Student Success team.
Will you work with my child's doctor or therapist? In the survey, 64.9% of coaches received referrals from health care professionals, and coaches reported handling medication and mental health topics. Ask how a coach shares progress and when they refer out.
Who knows our plan if you're out? 91.5% of surveyed coaches are self-employed, so the plan often lives with 1 person. Our answer: every student has a dedicated lead coach plus a team of educators and specialists.
What 2026 Research Says About ADHD Coaching
The research is promising and early. In a study published in March 2026 in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine, adults who completed 12 sessions of structured ADHD coaching improved on all 3 measures (ADHD symptoms, executive functioning and functional impairment), with statistically significant changes and medium to large effect sizes. The study had no control group.
A follow-up published in August 2026 checked 42 adults 6 weeks after their 12 sessions ended. Their gains held, and executive functioning and functional impairment improved slightly more. Both studies covered adults, not teens.
The authors of the 2026 coaching survey say randomized trials are still needed to show whether coaching is safe and whether it works. Across our own clients, most start noticing change in 4 to 8 weeks.

ADHD Coaching in Santa Monica: Questions Families Ask
Does my child need an ADHD diagnosis to start?
No. Roughly 70% of our clients are neurodivergent, a group that includes ADHD, autism, and executive function struggles without a formal diagnosis. If you suspect ADHD, your child's doctor or a psychologist can evaluate it; coaching can't diagnose ADHD.
Is ADHD coaching covered by insurance?
No, it's self-pay. We accept self-determination funding, and your HSA or FSA plan administrator can tell you whether coaching qualifies.
How is ADHD coaching different from tutoring or therapy?
Tutoring teaches a subject, and therapy treats emotional and mental health concerns. Coaching builds the planning and follow-through habits ADHD makes hard, and families can use all 3 at once.
Can coaching replace ADHD medication?
No. Medication decisions belong to the prescriber, and coaching works alongside medication and therapy.
How soon will we see changes?
Most clients start noticing change in 4 to 8 weeks.
Do you come to our home in Santa Monica?
Yes. Santa Monica is part of our Los Angeles West in-person area, along with Brentwood, Venice and Pacific Palisades. Online sessions are available too.
