Intake & Assessment

Everything begins with a phone consultation with one of our experienced client service enrollment coordinators. From this conversation, we gain insights into your family’s needs and assign an assessment coach who works directly with both the student and their family to determine specific goals and areas for support.

Implementation

Following the evaluation, our assessment team collaborates with the Student Success department to formulate a tailored strategy. Based on this plan, we begin weekly sessions. The frequency and duration of these sessions are customized according to the individual’s needs as identified in the assessment.

Ongoing Evaluation

The assigned coach works closely with our Student Success team to monitor progress. This collaboration allows us to identify critical milestones, adjust strategies when necessary, and introduce new skill-building techniques that best support the client’s development.

What is Executive Functioning?

Executive functioning refers to a set of 8–12 cognitive skills that enable individuals to plan, execute, and complete tasks. These functions play a critical role in everything from setting the dinner table and participating in sports to managing schoolwork and submitting assignments on time.

Below are the key executive functioning skills we help develop:

 

Organization

This skill involves developing systems and routines that help maintain order and make materials easy to locate.

Real-life signs: A child or adult frequently tosses homework into their backpack without folders or order. Misplacing keys, paperwork, or school assignments is a common issue.

Time Management

The capacity to estimate how long tasks will take and schedule accordingly to complete them on time.

Real-life signs: Tasks are left incomplete or done at the last minute. There's often confusion about why a deadline was missed or why time “ran out.”

Working Memory

This is the mental ability to hold and manipulate information long enough to complete a task.

Self-Monitoring

The skill of sustaining attention on a task or person, and smoothly transitioning focus between tasks as needed.

Task Initiation

The ability to begin a task independently without needing frequent prompting or supervision.

Real-life signs: Hesitation or procrastination when it’s time to start something. The person may wait for external encouragement to take the first step.

Emotional Regulation

This refers to managing emotional reactions appropriately in response to feedback, stress, or new instructions.

Real-life signs: Overreacting to minor issues or experiencing intense emotions that disrupt focus or behavior. Children and adults may have a hard time keeping their cool in difficult moments.

Task Management

The ability to break larger tasks into manageable steps and organize them effectively over time.

Real-life signs: Lacking awareness of how to tackle a multi-step project. May struggle with sequencing, time allocation, and prioritizing the smaller components.

Meta-Cognition

This is the understanding of one’s own learning style and the strategies that best support their success.

Real-life signs: Difficulty studying for exams or identifying effective learning techniques. There's often trial-and-error without much reflection on what works best.

Goal-Directed Perseverance

The ability to stay focused on long-term goals and push through obstacles to completion.

Real-life signs: Giving up when a task becomes hard or switching projects before finishing. Multiple assignments may be left half-done.

Flexibility

This skill involves adjusting well to changes in plans, expectations, or routines.
